Wellham family
tree
In 1797 a list was made up in Essex, and
other regions, of anyone who may be of use if there was an invasion from
France, at that time. The list for Ardleigh, Essex included Thomas
Wellham, aged 36, born 1761. The other family members living in the house at
that time were, his wife Mary Wellham and daughters Elizabeth, Lucy, Susan,
Maria and Mary. The names Thomas and Mary, as in this case have been passed
down to the next generations. |

In 1794 another Thomas Wellham was born
in Ardleigh Essex, he married Martha of Wivenhoe, Essex, where they were
living in 1881. Ardleigh is 5 miles north of Wivenhoe, Essex, where a Charles
Wellham was born in 1869, son of Thomas Austin Wellham born in 1840. These are
possible links on which I intend to do further searches. |

In the 1881 Census, Thomas Austin Wellham
born 1840, was living in 5 Alma Street, West Ham, Essex. This is where
Thomas Wellham was born in 1858. I believe
Charles, above, may be Thomas' brother.

Thomas Wellham born 1858 in West Ham
Essex, England. Occupation Soldier serving with 1st Battalion 5th Fusiliers,
Cambridge, Berkshire in 1881 Census. Later moved to Liverpool possibly on route
to America/Australia, as many other Wellham family members had done previously.
He stayed in Liverpool parish of Everton at 3 Butterfield Street, Kirkdale,
near the Docks. He became a Police Officer, (Census 1901) and had 6 children.
There is no wife recorded in the household in the 1901 census, only a house
servant called Sarah Williams and her son Thomas Williams age 3.
As in the 1901 census in the Parish of
Everton Lanc's. The six children of Thomas were: Richard aged 4, Emily 7,
Margaret 9, Edward 11, George 14, Mary 15.
George Wellham
Also in the 1901 census a George Wellham
aged 42 can be found living in Prittlewell, Essex with similar family names. He
is more than likely a brother of Thomas, and there is possibly another brother,
Percy Wellham living nearby in Essex aged 23, married to Kate, with no children
at the time of the 1901 census. There are several other family related
possibilities from that area of similar ages.
The six children of brother George and
wife Emma from Prittlewell, Essex were: George aged 16, Flory 14, Earnest 7,
Percy 5, Thomas 3, Beatrice 5 months.
Other Wellhams
Other Wellhams shown to be in Yorkshire in
the 1901 census were Henry Wellham aged 22 farmer, born in India 1879,
who may be a relative of Frederick Walter Wellham, born 22 Nov 1883 in
Sialkote, Punjab, India (Son of Joseph and Theresa Wellham.) There may be no
link? |
|
The only other link to the Wellham name
in Yorkshire at that time, was William Wellham a shoemaker from Aislaby
near Whitby, North Yorks. He was recorded in 1897 four years before the census,
but did not show up in the 1901 census. In the 1881 census was a John
Wellham, born 1849, with wife Jane and three children, Thomas W 9, Johanna
C and John A, living in Aislaby, Yorks. They don't appear in 1901 census.
