The Wellham name arrived in Australia
during the late1800s, if anyone can give more information please contact the
e-mail number. In Australia, like in all other parts of the world, the Wellhams
have settled in and made themselves known, by naming areas or roads after their
name, or by the name becoming famous. The name has also
spread out to many parts of Australia.
The Wellham name can also be traced to
India, through place
names. I am not sure how they might have arrived in India, possibly
through the Regiments based in that area. I am told the Essex Regiment were
based in the Punjab region of India, bordering Pakistan and the Himalayas. This
is where the place names can be found. I have found individuals Christening
records in the Bengal region during 1879, and from the same family in 1883 in
Sialkote, Punjab region, now just inside Pakistan.
Other
connections
It is interesting, when reading the family tree, to discover a Henry
Wellham living in Yorkshire, not long before George Wellham, son of Thomas
Wellham arrives in Yorkshire. Henry was on the 1901 Census form as being born
in India in 1879. His parents were Joseph and Theresa Wellham. In the 1881
Census there was a Joseph Wellham, born 1839 in Little Wakering, Essex,
England. Husband of Louisa Wellham, born in 1852 in Prittlewell, Essex,
England. They had a son John Wellham born 1869 in North Shoebury, Essex,
England. John could possibly have been the younger brother, or cousin, of
Joseph Wellham, recorded in India in 1879 &1883. This assumption is based
on, as in many other cases of the Wellham history, the father naming his first
born son, after himself or his brother. There is another Christian name link to
a Charles Joseph Wellham, who a decade before that time in 1870, was getting
married in Queensland, Australia, he died in 1938.
It is also interesting to discover,
whilst searching the family name, that the Wellham name can be found in
Norfolk, England, Norfolk, Virginia, USA and in Norfolk Island in the Pacific
Ocean.
The Wellham family name can also now be
found in the Shetlands, the Isle of Man, Canada and New Zealand.
Christian names
The most common Wellham Christian names in
the 19th & 20th Centuries are, (from the 1901 Census), George 8 persons,
Thomas 4, Joseph 2, John 3, William or Wilhelmina 2, Margaret 3, Mary 3, Henry
or Henrietta 5, Kate or Kathleen 3, Florence or Flory 3, Francis or Frank 4,
Frederick 2, Emma or Emily 5, Ernest 2, Elizabeth 3, Ellen 3, Annie, Anne or
Ann 4, Arthur 4, Ada 3, Alfred 3 and Alice 2. The majority of these are of
Saxon origin.
Whilst looking at all the Christian names
in the 1901 census relating to Wellham, you can find all the names of every
King or Queen except Stephen and Victoria, since 1066. Also many Danish and
Anglo Saxon Kings and Queens.
In America, Australia and India, new
Christian names have been added to the collection over the years. In Australia,
Walter or Wally and Dirk have appeared, which have not previously been
documented to my Knowledge in England, but Walter has, as a second Christian
name in India. In America Byron Burnell, Essie May, Clara, Tallulah Magnolia,
Anne Marie and Myrtle Marie. In India Merja has appeared which is unique and
perhaps a sign of integration with the indigenous population.
The names George and Thomas, common in
Essex, and in the family tree of the Wellhams of Worcester, were also common in
America and Australia during the 19th and 20th centuries, there may be family
links.
