The Mawson name appeared on records as early as the 1300s, in Silden, Yorkshire. It can be easily traced back to the 1700s in other areas. The name spread throughout the British Empire during the 1700 and 1800s to America, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Famous family

The name became famous in Australia through Douglas Mawson born 1882 - 1958, the greatest Australian explorer of the Antartica at the time. Mawson Base is still in Australian, Antartica. The time their is called Mawson time, which is 5 hours behind Eastern Australian Time, and 6 hours in front of GMT. Mawson, luckily did not join the ill fated Scott Expedition to the South Pole.

Thomas Mawson, 1861 - 1933, was a famous Landscape Architect in his time. Micheal Hargreave Mawson was a famous historian and witness to the Crimea War.

The name today

The Mawson family of Yorkshire, were linked to the Wellham family through Ada Firth's mother. Ada married George William Wellham. They had three children, Margaret, Dorothy and George Brian. George Brian Wellham married Thelma Anne Playdon of Worcester. They had four children, Sarah, Simon, Nicholas and Nigel. Simon married Diane Bullock of Malvern, Worcestershire. They had two sons Jamie George William and Luke George Brian Wellham.
