Origins of the
name
Harmer has many variations, one of which
is Harman. Generally the earliest appearances of the name are in three
counties, Sussex, Norfolk and Gloucestershire. They appear to be different
families - there is no firm evidence, but it is suggested in other people's
research that the families may have been linked back in Roman times.
There are records dating back to the1500s
where you can find a Thomas Harmer and Sarah Payne, parents of Joseph Harmer
born 1592, in Norfolk. The family appears to spread to Huntington, Lincolnshire
and Essex during the 1600s then to all parts of the UK.
During the 1700s they can be found
emigrating in heavy numbers to America and later to all other parts of the
British Empire at the time. Records show the marraige of Thomas Harmer to
Catherine Slater in 1742, in Pensylvania, USA.
