Origins of the
name
The name Farr can be traced back to the
1200s, on an individual report with LDS, BMD. They are again traced in the
1400s millenium file. In the 1500s they show up in London, Worcestershire,
Essex, Hertfordshire and Devon. They are also seen in the late 1500s on
migration ships to New England in America.
In the 1700s there are traces of the Farr
name all over England and Wales, a family of Farrs were in Merriott, Somerset
at this time later some of the family emigrated to Wales in the
1800s.
Place names
There are three places in Scotland called
Farr. Firstly one on the east side of Lockness, on the B851, south of
Inverness. Secondly to the south east on the B970. The third on the north coast
west of Thurso. The meaning for Farr is 'wide river mouth'.
Famous family
William Farr 1807-1883, was a famous
medical statistician in the 1800s from Shropshire. In Wales Tommy Farr,
1914-1986, the boxer was 'Heavyweight Champion of Britain and the
Empire'.
The name today
In America today there are many Farrs
including the actress Felicia Farr, who acted along side actors like
Audie Murphy in cinema films. There is also a law firm based in New York and
Washington in America , with branches in London and Paris. A congressman for
California is Sam Farr. The Farrs can also be found in Victoria Australia and
many other places.
In England and Wales today, the Farrs can
be found in all occupations such as, solicitors, wine merchants, Yacht
designers, carpet and upholstery designers, estate agents, but are particularly
reknowned for 'diving and cave exploration' and as playwrights (the West End
comedy 'Elton John's Glasses' was written by David Farr).
